About the Optical Management Certification Course

The Optical Management Certification Course (OPTMC) is accredited by the Accreditation by the Higher Education Committee (AHEC). OPTMC is a unique 8-week program designed to provide ODs/MDs, opticians, optical staff and optical managers with the skills necessary to manage a successful and profitable optical. The program focuses on frame management, assortment management and building custom tools to take your optical to the next level.

Attendees will:

  • Learn how to successfully manage an optical, including independent private practices, optical boutiques, separate optical dispensaries and luxury optical.
  • Develop the proficiencies necessary to run an optical, including different business models and how to apply and review metrics critical to success.
  • Learn how to identify what a buyer wants, set up selling strategies, create and maintain frame board management, as well as other important strategies necessary to run a successful and profitable optical.

This program is limited to a maximum of 50 registrants. 

Schedule

The 2024 Spring Session will be held from February 27 to May 3.

This is an 8-week program. Each week there will be one 1-hour live online seminar held on Tuesdays. There will be 6 homework exercises, one quiz and one final exam.

Attendees will receive a webinar link to watch the live sessions in real-time which due to the nature of this program’s hands-on content, it is STRONGLY encouraged to be present and available for all LIVE sessions.  All live sessions will be recorded and posted for attendees to review the following day and throughout the program.

Earning Your Certificate

Each participant must receive at least 80% on all six exercises, the quiz and final exam to qualify to earn a certificate.

Exercises, Quiz & Final Exam Information

All exercises, the quiz and the final exam are fill-in-the-blank. Students will have one opportunity to correct exercises and the quiz.

Exercises

Each week, students are responsible for completing assigned exercises. The exercises are due the following Monday from when assigned.

Quiz

There will be one quiz halfway through the program.

  • Quiz: Week 4

Final Exam

The final exam is custom to each student and is due two weeks after assigned. The final exam can only be taken once.

With her extensive expertise, she has worked closely with hundreds of optometry practices, providing valuable guidance and support. In addition to her practical experience, Kayla holds a Ph.D. in counseling, further enhancing her ability to understand and address the needs of patients and professionals in the field. Combining her optical knowledge with her counseling expertise, she has developed educational programs that greatly benefit the industry. Notably, Kayla is the creator of the billing and coding certification course (OBCCP), a comprehensive program that equips individuals with the necessary skills to handle the financial aspects of optometry practices efficiently. She has also developed the Optical Management Certification Course (OPTMC), empowering professionals to oversee and optimize the operations of their practices effectively. Kayla’s dedication to the optical field, extensive experience, and commitment to education make her a valuable resource to our members.

Joel got his start in Optics with Pearle Vision back in 2004. Since then he has worked as an optical manager, optical trainer, district manager, and a vendor rep for some of the largest organizations in the industry. Joel has a passion for the industry, especially optical, where he has spent his entire career focusing on training and developing others, sales, merchandising, staffing, and leadership. In his spare time, Joel enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 sons. He also enjoys traveling, swimming, movies, fishing, sports, TV, music, and stand-up comedy.
