Event Summary
PECAA is pleased to announce its next ABO-NCLE virtual education event: Level Up Your Patient Care Game: The Future Is Bright! Taking place on Sunday, May 19, 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM ET, this event will provide six (6) hours of ABO & NCLE-approved continuing education to opticians and optical staff across the country and will be presented in a synchronous, virtual webinar format.
Each PECAA education event delivers impactful instruction in areas relevant to contemporary eye care practice. The May 19th event will present a variety of concepts and principles that together will build confidence and skills to better serve your patients. Starting with the recent impact of telehealth and a peek into the future, next up will be a review of common optical math concepts, followed by a dive into the principles of visual assessment, for both opticians and technicians. Finally, attendees will have the opportunity to discuss with colleagues the pressing questions and challenges that optical staff face every day.
Level Up Your Patient Care Game: The Future Is Bright! is open to all optical staff nationwide, including PECAA Max members, HEA Advantage members, non-members, and those who do not need ABO-NCLE credits. We look forward to welcoming your team members to this event.

11:10 AM – 12:00 PM — Telehealth Is Here To Stay. Really!!
Speaker: Valerie Manso, ABOC, FNAO, ALB, ACB
ABO-NCLE CE Hours: 1 — Course Level: ABO Technical Level II or NCLE Technical Level II
Description: COVID 19 shook up our world in very many ways. Telemedicine (also known as telehealth or teletherapy for mental health clinics) quickly became the most practical way for health care providers to stay connected with patients, provide needed care, and still receive reimbursement. Once past the technical, system and billing issues, most patients and providers found the interactions productive and even preferable for many types of visits. Now we are asking, is this a stop-gap solution? Will this become more mainstream long-term? Will patients respond positively to a virtual visit? Can our office and staff make this a productive, efficient component of the workflow and care delivery systems? The answers to these questions are yes, yes, and yes!
12:00 – 12:10 PM — Q&A
12:15 – 1:05 PM — Math For Common Optical Concepts — Part 1
Speaker: Andrew Bruce, LDO, ABOM, FNAO, NCLEM, FCLSA
ABO-NCLE CE Hours: 1 — Course Level: ABO Technical Level II or NCLE Technical Level II
Description: The daily lives of Eye Care Professionals require the use of many optical concepts. This two-part course explores a selection of the most common, from a mathematical perspective. Part 1 will address basic to intermediate topics and part 2 will explore more advanced. Actual examples of the calculations involved will be provided for each concept discussed. The topics examined throughout include basic metric conversion, focal length formula, Vogel’s rule to determine base curve, effective power formula for changes in vertex distance, corneal curvature conversion, and the use of FAP and SAM in GP calculations. It goes without saying, a math course on optical concepts would be incomplete without including some prism-related demonstrations.
1:05 – 1:15 PM — Q&A
1:20 – 3:00 PM — An Introduction To Principles Of Visual Assessment For Opticians And Technicians
Speaker: Diane F. Drake, LDO, ABOM, NCLEM, FNAO
ABO-NCLE CE Hours: 2 — Course Level: ABO Technical Level III or NCLE Technical Level III
Description: This course will introduce the participant to the principles of a visual assessment to include refraction, describing information gathered/history taking and the workflow process. Topics covered will include definitions, A&P, refractive errors, instrumentation, visual acuity, objective and subjective findings and binocular balancing.
3:00 – 3:10 PM — Q&A
3:10 – 3:30 PM — Break
3:30 – 5:10 PM — Ask, Share, Learn — Optical Round-Table
Speaker: Jackie O’Keefe, LDO
ABO-NCLE CE Hours: 2 — Course Level: ABO Technical Level II or NCLE-GK
Description: There are days when we as eyecare professionals wish we had a room full of experts to help us during our day. Whether the assistance you desire is help with patient objections, time management, optical concepts and a plethora of other topics, we are here to help you. The goal of this interactive course is to allow the attendees to direct the discussion and present what is most challenging in their own practices and to share their success stories. Attendees can text their questions, write them on paper provided or simply raise their hands. This interactive course has been well received. The panel will be available to answer any questions that arise.
5:10 – 5:20 PM — Q&A
5:20 – 5:30 PM — Conclusion And Adjournment
