Event Summary

PECAA is pleased to announce its next COPE virtual education event: Ocular Treatments: A Cutting-Edge Approach. Taking place on Sunday, March 9th, 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM ET, this event will provide six (6) hours of COPE-accredited clinical continuing education to optometrists across the country and will be presented in a synchronous, virtual Zoom webinar format. In accordance with current COPE/ARBO guidelines there are no testing requirements for synchronous virtual formatted courses to count as COPE approved CE credits.

Expand your knowledge and learn new treatment methods for eye conditions related to metabolic diseases, opioids, ocular surface disease and sexually transmitted infections. Information gained through these sessions will empower you with cutting-edge treatment options for a variety of conditions that extend beyond traditional eye care.

Ocular Treatments: A Cutting-Edge Approach is open to all optometrists nationwide, including PECAA Max members, HEA Advantage members and non-members — PECAA Propel members are also invited to join us. We look forward to welcoming you to this event.

This course reviews common metabolic diseases, including diabetes mellitus (Type 2), hyperlipidemia, and thyroid disease. This course will describe recent updates in treatment guidelines and side effects associated with medications used in these diseases, as well as a discussion about the impact of epigenetics. Patient case anecdotes will be integrated into the presentation, where differential diagnosis and work-up will be discussed.

Description:
This is an oral pharmacology course that describes the appropriate use of opioid medications, with an emphasis on pain management within the scope of Optometry and general pain management. Case anecdotes will include management of ocular pain, with specific emphasis on oral/systemic medications. Opioid medications will be evaluated in terms of risk versus benefit, with an emphasis on appropriate use of pain medications, evaluation of potential addiction, and a description on how to protect both patient and practitioner.
