Targeted Nutrition for Reduction of Oxidation and Inflammation: Implications for Vision, Cognition, and Systemic Health & Performance (ABO CE)

Date & Time: Wednesday, April 13th, 2022 | 9:00am — 10:00am PT
Presented by: Dr. James Stringham, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer at MacuHealth
Sponsored by: MacuHealth

Course Description:

In this course, attendees will learn about the benefits across the lifespan of macular carotenoid and DHA + EPA supplementation for visual, cognitive, neurophysiological, and systemic health and performance. A brief history of the study of macular carotenoids will be presented, followed by a “tour of studies” that have examined effects of the lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. Particular emphasis will be placed on the antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of macular carotenoids, DHA, and EPA, and how they serve as mechanisms for visual, cognitive, and systemic health and performance effects. Data from studies conducted in utero through old age will be covered. Relatively new systemic effects associated with macular carotenoid status, including lowered blood cortisol and inflammatory markers, will also be discussed.

Chief Scientific Officer at MacuHealth

Dr. James Stringham HeadshotDr. Stringham joined the MacuHealth team after a distinguished career in research and academia. He earned his doctorate in experimental psychology and neuroscience from the University of New Hampshire in 2003, and did postdoctoral training at both Harvard Medical School and the Medical College of Georgia. He has since held positions at the University of Georgia, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and most recently the Duke Eye Center. Nearly all of his research has been geared toward understanding visual and cognitive benefits of the macular carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. As the Chief Scientific Officer of MacuHealth, Dr. Stringham will expand the scope of research and application of the macular carotenoids to include investigation of effects that may benefit visual and cognitive performance in athletes, visual and systemic health in those with metabolic disease, and neural health and development in children.
