Event Summary

PECAA is pleased to announce its next COPE virtual education event: CE Potpourri 2023: Dynamic Speakers On Compelling Ocular Topics. Taking place on Sunday, December 3rd, 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM ET, this event will provide six (6) hours of COPE-accredited clinical continuing education to optometrists across the country and will be presented in a synchronous, virtual Zoom webinar format. COPE has modified the rules going forward, removing the testing requirement for synchronous virtual formatted courses to count as COPE approved CE credits.

Each PECAA education event provides impactful instruction on a targeted area relevant to contemporary eye care practice. The December 3rd event will feature a combination of the top compelling ocular topics in our industry this year. Attendees will expand their knowledge on the navigation of choosing the right scleral lens and gain a stronger understanding of the importance of myopia control and preventing future visual impairment. These lectures will uncover just how common strabismus and amblyopia are in the primary care setting, and the layers will be peeled back to provide a deeper understanding of diagnosing and treating glaucoma.

CE Potpourri 2023: Dynamic Speakers on Compelling Ocular Topics is open to all optometrists nationwide, including PECAA Max members, HEA Advantage members and non-members. We look forward to welcoming you to this event.

11:15 AM – 12:05 PM — Level Up Your Scleral Lens Game

Speaker: Melissa Barnett, OD, FAAO, FSLS, FBCLA
CE Hours: 1 COPE Course ID: 86039-CL
Description:
This case series will describe various conditions where scleral lenses are indicated. Each case will describe a corneal or anterior segment disease and how to manage that disease with a scleral lens. We will describe what lens was chosen and the reasoning behind the choice. Benefits and challenges of lens fitting each individual patient will also be discussed. Also, new scleral lens technology will be introduced as it pertains to each case.

12:05 – 12:15 PM — Q&A

12:20 – 1:10 PM — Myopia Control: Why Each Diopter Matters

Speaker: Mark Bullimore, MCOptom, PhD, FAAO
CE Hours: 1 COPE Course ID: 84427-GO
Description:
This course provides an evidence-based review of myopia control and its importance for preventing future visual impairment. Emphasis is place on peer-reviewed, randomized clinical trials with changes in both axial length and refractive error. Progressive addition lenses and under-correction have little or a deleterious effect. There is compelling evidence that atropine, center-distance multifocal soft contact lenses, and overnight orthokeratology all produce clinically meaningful slowing of myopia. The underlying mechanisms are also discussed.

1:10 – 1:20 PM — Q&A

1:25 – 3:05 PM — Strabismus And Amblyopia Pearls For Primary Care

Speaker: Erin Jenewein, OD, MS, FAAO
CE Hours: 2 COPE Course ID: 86650-FV
Description:
Strabismus and amblyopia are relatively common conditions that often present in a primary care optometry setting. The initial diagnosis and management of many of these conditions can be done in a primary care setting. This course covers common diagnostic and management considerations for the treatment of strabismus and amblyopia in a primary care optometry setting, including when to refer patients for additional care.

3:05 – 3:15 PM — Q&A

3:15 – 3:30 PM — Break

3:30 – 5:10 PM — Is It Glaucoma Or A Masquerader?

Speaker: Cecelia Koetting, OD, FAAO, Dipl ABO
CE Hours: 2 COPE Course ID: 87036-GL
Description:
When evaluating new patients to your practice or a previous patient, it is important to monitor optic nerve changes. When we see RNFL thinning and or visual field loss, we know we need to treat the patient for glaucoma. But what is the true underlying etiology? In this lecture, we will explore the diagnostic and management differences between primary open angle and low-tension glaucoma versus secondary glaucoma and other ONH changes.

5:10 – 5:20 PM — Q&A

5:20 – 5:30 PM — Conclusion And Adjournment
